ACCELERATED PROGRAMS AT MIAMI SOUTHRIDGE
THE NEW ACADEMIC POWERHOUSE

Miami Southridge has two opportunities for accelerated studies:  Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Enrollment (DE).

Advanced Placement:

  • Hosted by College Board, the international organization that creates the SAT, PSAT, and AP exams
  • Requirements to enter AP – if the student has maintained an A or B in an honors course, then she/he may be recommended for AP; recommendation must come from teacher in that subject area
  • Requirements to remain in AP courses – if the student  maintains an A, B, or C in AP courses, then she/he may continue on the AP track
  • Gaining college credit – college credit is only awarded after the student passes (usually with a 3+) the AP exam in the subject area; test usually given in May; ivy league colleges may require a 4 or 5 score; colleges/universities choose whether or not to give credit for AP courses—although most will give credit for passing scores
  • Upcoming AP offerings – French, German, Italian, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Human Geography, World History, Calculus, Statistics, Art History, Studio Art
  • AP courses are listed on subject selection sheets under Elective Advanced Placement Courses

Dual Enrollment:

  • Hosted by Florida International University (FIU)
  • Requirements to enter DE – Without a waiver – 3.0 unweighted GPA, PSAT – 50 or SAT – 500 or ACT – 21
With a waiver – 2.5 unweighted GPA, PSAT – 44 or SAT – 450 or ACT 18, FCAT level 3, teacher recommendation, passing CPT (College Placement Test)
  • Upcoming DE offerings – English Composition 1, English Composition 2, American History 1, American History 2, Western Civilization, Pre-Calculus, College Algebra, and a business course (not yet identified)
  • DE courses may fulfill a core class or an elective requirement
  • Gaining college credit – college credit is rewarded to students receiving A, B, or C in the course; however, when a student receives a C in a course, she/he will not be allowed to take any other DE classes
  • DE courses may not be listed on the subject selection sheets.  Therefore, fill out the subject selection sheet as you normally would.  Then, go to display outside #237 and get a DE packet.  Complete the packet and slip it under the door of #237.  If you meet the criteria, your schedule will be revamped during the summer, and you will be placed in the appropriate DE class(es).

Two ways Miami Southridge is enhancing your academic experience.
