Summer shouldn't mean taking a break from learning, especially reading. Studies show that most students experience a loss of reading skills over the summer months, but students who continue to read actually gain skills. The primary purpose of our summer reading program is to lead students to an appreciation of good literature and to let them discover that reading is enjoyable. Other benefits include a development of reading comprehension skills, a building of vocabulary, a better understanding of interactions between people, and a broadening of knowledge about various cultures represented in the books we have chosen.
